Dacian fortress: Piatra Roșie

Exit the highway at Orastie, take road E68 and turn left on road E79 to Hateg. In Kalan turn left to Streisangorgiu.

The church of Streisangeorgiu is famous for its old paintings, unfortunately it was closed on Sunday. The opening hours are….#

Take road 668A towards southeast to Luncani. From Luncani the road became a bumpi gravel road. Carefully we drove up the valley and parked the car at an small intersection below the piatra rosie mountain.

Today we just walked, yet I think it would be a great tour to park the car at Luncani and go up riding mountain bike. The valley is beautiful and the road not to steep.

From the intersection we walked up until the road steps out of the forest. Here you have to leave the road and walk up strait through apple tree land until you reach the forest. Now turn left through a wooden gate and continue straight on the ridge, soon you will find the information board of the fortress.

Piatra Roșie Fortress was build on a huge rock. After reaching the plateau, we passed the first entrance gate – means what is left over – and walked up the two terassess. On the second terrass still the old stairway is existing , leading up to the former entrance gate.

It was build about 40 km from Sarmizegetusa Regia, which is a days walk, to protect the area from the Celts. The fortress was concurred in 106 by the romans and completely destroyed.
