Cetatea Deva – Deva Fortress

The fortress of Deva is located on the top of a massive volcanic rock. It was mentioned first in 1269 and was involved in various military usage and actions. A huge renovation has been carried out from 1817 which lasted twelve years.
On August 13th, 1849 a strong explosion caused by gunpowder stored in the fortress, destroyed it completely and killed several people.
From the parking area, a cable car brings up the visitors. Alternatively, you can walk. There is nothing available on the top, better bring some water up there.
Using highway, it takes about 1:30 hours for the 115 km from Deva to Sibiu.
